A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease and in the fitting of dental implants. Periodontal disease is also referred to as gum disease and includes gingivitis and periodontitis. Periodontists undertake three additional years of study following dental school in order to specialize in the treatment of these diseases.
Dentists may refer their patients who have periodontal disease to a periodontist. However, referrals are not essential, and individuals may set up their own appointment.
